6 Great Tips For Packing Your Furniture For A Move

Home / Archives for Furniture

Moving to a new place is an exciting and stressful time. Moving all your belongings without damaging them or losing precious belongings are aspects that you should consider when packing a moving van or trailer. Your furniture is something that is built to last, so treating it correctly during a move will ensure that it makes it to your new home in the best state possible.

Below are some do’s and don’ts for packing your furniture items and transporting them to your new living space. If you want to ensure that your home has plenty of space for furniture and you have the pieces that you love still intact, follow these guidelines for packing your furniture.

1- Disassemble Large Furniture Pieces

Pieces that are too heavy to carry or may not fit through small spaces should be disassembled to make the moving process smoother. Disassembling furniture can be tricky if you are in a hurry, but when done properly, you can ensure that all the components receive proper padding and fit nicely in a moving truck.

When you disassemble, make sure to keep small parts like screws or fasteners in a baggie or container that is clearly labeled with what furniture piece they belong to. If you have assembly instructions for the piece, it may be helpful to use them in the disassembling process as well.

2- Get Rid Of Old Furniture

Old furniture that is falling apart or will not fit in your new home should be disposed of or sold before you are ready to move. Packing your furniture will be much easier if broken or old pieces are taken out of the mix. You will want your furniture in your new home to be ready to go once you move in, so hauling damaged furniture to be dealt with in your new place is counterproductive.

3- Inspect For Damages And Record Before The Move

Some furniture pieces have minimal damage but still perform well, taking photos or inspecting the furniture and recording what dings or scuffs they have before the move will help you monitor the state of the furniture. If you have a moving company help load and unload your furniture, keeping track of these damages will help you to know if they damaged anything during the move. Packing your furniture by yourself could also lead to new dents or scratches if it is not wrapped properly. Knowing what small areas need to be repaired when you get to the new space will help save you time.

4- How To Wrap Your Furniture

packing your furniture

Each furniture piece needs to be wrapped and protected differently. Couches, dressers, chairs, or mirrors may need different padding and directional wrapping.

Couches: When packing a couch or upholstered chairs, a furniture bag may be a good option. You can also use blankets held in place with packing tape if a furniture bag is not available. Leather should never be wrapped with plastic as it needs to breathe.

Glass or mirrors: Removing glass components from table tops or dressers will help lower the risk of them being broken. These furniture pieces should be wrapped in packing paper and taped with masking tape. Make sure to never stick tape directly on the surface of the furniture as it can damage it or get severely stuck to the glass and be hard to remove.

Wood furniture: Wrapping wood furniture in any kind of plastic can be damaging. If you want to protect your wood pieces properly, pack them with blankets or furniture pads and ensure all surfaces are covered.

5- Clean Furniture Before Packing It

Removing dust and grit before packing your furniture will help reduce friction and scratches on the furniture pieces. During moving, grime can cause surfaces to be slippery or cause damage to other pieces that are stacked together.

Cleaning before you arrive at your new place will not only help you keep your furniture nicer, but it will also save you stress and time worrying about cleaning once the pieces are moved into your new place. Cleaning a new place is a common practice, but limiting the number of surfaces you need to clean can lead to more relaxation time.

6- Leave Plenty Of Time For Packing Furniture

Packing your furniture in a rush can lead to problems. Leaving yourself with plenty of time to wrap, pad, pack, and stack furniture will prevent damage and frustration. Planning your move early will also help you determine if you need the help of a professional moving team. Taking the time to create a packing plan will keep your furniture safe and sound until you reach your destination.

Gathering for a meal or an evening chat are common ways to strengthen family relationships and friendships. Having quality seating options for the dining room can help make this space more comfortable for a variety of activities. Dining room seating options may seem obvious, but there are different styles, materials, and additional options that are not placed around the table that can help elevate your dining experience.

Sugar House Furniture offers mission-style furniture pieces for multiple rooms in your home. We believe that high-quality furniture is something that every adult should have access to. Our furniture experts can help you make the right choice when it comes to seating, storage, and decorative options that best suit your space.

1- Benches

Many people don’t consider benches when they first begin to research dining room seating. While benches may not be your first thought when it comes to seating around your dining table, they can be a unique option to elevate your dining experience and actually make seating large groups more comfortable.

Benches come in multiple lengths and widths to best accommodate your space. They can be made of wood, metal, stone, or be upholstered. Having a bench around the table can save space and make it easier to leave and sit down at the table because there are no shuffling legs or shifting seats over.

2- Barstools Or Bar Height Chairs

Tall dining tables are becoming a popular design choice in dining rooms and kitchens. Choosing bar-height dining room seating or barstools can help people reach your table and elevate the look of your dining room. For spaces with tall ceilings, taller furniture pieces will be needed to help make the space feel full.

Bar stools can be used around a table or at an island bar. Bar stools can look like traditional chairs, or they can resemble more of a farm-type stool. The design options for these heightened chairs are growing to fit more personality types and home themes.

3- Upholstered Furniture

Making your guests or family comfortable is a large goal that should be accomplished by furniture. Dining room seating can be upholstered so that they are more comfortable to sit on for long periods of time. Upholstered chairs, benches, or barstools can make your dining experience more comfortable and limit back or leg pain.

Another benefit of upholstered furniture is its ease of cleaning. This makes it a great option for dining rooms because it is more likely to see stains. These furniture pieces can be wiped with a damp cloth or combined with a stain remover. While it is more durable, upholstery will require some maintenance to remain in good condition. Especially with constant use and sliding from people sitting on them.

4- Additional Lounge Seating

The kitchen is a common gathering place, even if you are not eating. Including additional comfortable seating inside your dining room can help people feel comfortable hanging around the kitchen and dining area after they have finished their meal. Lounge areas in the corner of the dining room, window seats, or upholstered benches can make your dining area multipurpose and seem more inviting.

Lounge seating can be a good option for game nights, family birthday parties, or other events you may be hosting in your home. These additional seating options can also be moved into other rooms and be used to accommodate more people.

Consider Height, Width, And Scale

Fitting any furniture piece in your home will come down to finding the right height, width, and scale for the other furniture. When you are looking at the design or materials for dining room seating, it is important to look at technical aspects as well.

Choosing the right chairs for your dining table will come down to how they fit around and under the table. This can be determined by the height and width of the dining chairs. If you choose chairs that are too tall, it will make it difficult to eat while sitting on them at the table.

If you are looking at benches or stools, the width compared to your table or wall space will help to ensure it fits comfortably. If there is not enough space between each wall to be putting a 5-foot bench around your table, you may need to consider another option or reduce the bench length.

Upholstery is a word that is commonly used in the furniture industry. It is an important part of all sorts of different types of furniture and can be useful to know to become a more educated furniture buyer. Continue reading to learn more about upholstered furniture and tips for how to properly care for your upholstery.

What Is Upholstery?

Brady Recliner #BD3238RC, upholstery

Before getting into how you can take care of your upholstery, it is important to define what upholstery is. The word “upholstery” can refer either to the work of fitting furniture with padding, springs, fabric, and other coverings or it can refer to the materials that are used to upholster something. Upholstery is used to make couches, chairs, futons, and other types of furniture that have cushions connected directly to the backing. Upholstered furniture is a well-loved staple of any homeowner’s furniture collection.

Tips For Caring For Upholstery

The first thing that you need to do in order to take care of your upholstery is to keep it clean. Make sure to avoid eating on upholstered furniture and vacuum regularly, especially if you decide to eat while sitting on your furniture. Make sure that when you vacuum your furniture, you do it with a gentle machine or use a soft-bristled brush to get rid of any dirt that has collected on the surface of your furniture.

Keep Your Upholstered Furniture In The Shade

The next tip to help your upholstered furniture last longer is to keep it out of the sun. Whether you have indoor or outdoor furniture, it is important to keep your upholstered furniture in areas of your home where they are out of the way of sunlight. The reason for this is that the sun’s rays can fade fabrics and cause the drying or cracking of certain types of materials. If you have outdoor furniture, you may want to have a cover to protect it when you’re not using it, from both sunlight and precipitation.

Rotate Your Cushions

Some types of upholstered furniture have removable cushions. When you have the option to take the cushions off of your furniture, it is important to move them around. If cushions are always kept in the same spot, then they may become lopsided or deformed over time. Fluffing and rotating your cushions will not only protect your furniture from becoming misshapen, but it can help make your furniture look better.

Pay Attention To Stains

The next time you are sitting on your furniture with food or drink and a spill occurs, make sure that you know what to do. Spills need to be acted upon quickly in order to avoid any problems. Dab any spills quickly with a washcloth instead of rubbing it and avoid using any harsh chemicals. Instead choose a cleaning solution that is made specifically for upholstery.
