Too Big, Too Small, Just Right—The Perfect Bed Size for You

Home / Archives for Furniture

In order to get a good night’s sleep, you have to find the right bed for your needs. But how do you do so? How do you make that Goldilocks decision about the perfect bed size for you? The first step is awareness of what is available.

Standard Bed Sizes

When it comes to the perfect bed size, you have options. There are a few sizes that we do not elaborate on here—non-standard bed sizes like Olympic queens and Texas, Wyoming, and Alaska kings—and if the beds on this list don’t meet your needs, you may consider them. Here we focus on the most traditional bed sizes.

Cribs

Crib sizes vary pretty broadly, but it is common for standard crib mattresses to measure 28 by 52 inches. Mini cribs fall within the 24 by 38 inches range. Crib styles also offer a lot of variety.

Twin

A twin mattress is the standard model. The dimensions are 38 inches wide by 75 inches long, offering 2,850 square inches of surface area. If you want a bed that is very affordable with lots of options for sheets and bed frames, a twin may be the perfect bed size for you. Twins are ideal for children who will eventually outgrow the mattress or for otherwise short single sleepers.

Twin XL

Twin XLs are often the perfect bed size for teenagers or single adult sleepers taller than six feet. At 38″ x 80″ and 3,040 square inches, twin XL beds are the same length as queen and king mattresses but less wide. Many people find that this bed size provides ample legroom, even when sharing the bed with a pet. Because of its twin width, it is not an ideal size for couples. It can also be difficult to find sheets and other accessories of both the right length and width.

Full

Full mattresses measure 4,050 square inches, 54 inches wide by 75 inches long. Without quite reaching the dimensions of a queen, full beds can still be pretty spacious for adults shorter than six feet tall. Many households opt for full sized beds in guest bedrooms, but before buying one consider all the angles. Full beds can be more affordable, though when they are nearly the price of a queen, the significantly reduced space may not be worth it.

Queen

Queen beds are the first on this list that are geared towards sleeping couples. They are also good for single sleepers who like a lot of space. They measure 60 by 80 inches, offering 4,800 square inches of surface area. This means they are not the same width as two twin beds, though a queen is roughly five inches longer.

Queens are the most common bed size. This means that sheets, comforters, bed skirts, and other accessories are widely available. A queen may be the perfect bed for you if you don’t plan to share your bed with children as well as a significant other. Queens are also easier to move than much wider kings.

King

At 76″ x 80″ and 6,080 square inches of surface area, king mattresses offer the same width as two twins pushed together in addition to an extra five inches in length. Kings are the perfect bed for couples who prefer a lot of space, perhaps because they move around during sleep or because they share the bed with a child.

Kings are the largest overall mattress size. This makes them difficult to move and means that they tend to dominate any room. They are also more expensive than smaller mattresses, but you get the space you pay for. Kings are a very standard bed size, so finding accessories is not difficult.

California King

The last on our list is the California king. Measuring 72″ x 84″ with a surface area of 6,048 square inches, the California king is not as wide as its stateless counterpart, but it is longer. This makes this mattress size good for tall couples or those who let their pet sleep at the foot of the bed. California kings are the most expensive mattress size. They are difficult to move, and finding linens that fit can be a challenge.

How to Choose the Perfect Bed Size for You

Before you can know the perfect bed size for you, there are a few questions to ask yourself:

  • Who is sleeping in the bed?
  • How tall are the sleepers?
  • Do you roll around much in your sleep?
  • Do you sleep fully extended or curled up?
  • How big is the room?
  • Do you move often or will otherwise need to move the mattress a lot?
  • Is the bed for a child who will grow more quickly?
  • What is your budget?

Furniture experts are a great resource when it comes to answering these kinds of questions. Our team members at Sugar House Furniture can help you find the perfect bed size for you and walk with you as you explore our array of custom mission furniture.

Adding a coffee table in your living room can help elevate the look of the space and increase storage space. Choosing the right coffee table depends on the size of your living room, the type of couch you have, and the atmosphere you are trying to create.

Sugar House Furniture offers different heights, widths, and shapes of coffee tables to help fit any home design. Our coffee tables are made with durable wood and often come in multiple stain colors. Below we will discuss some elements and measurements that can help you choose the right coffee table that will serve you and add to the design of your living space.

Use the ⅔ rule

When you are measuring for a coffee table it is best to utilize the ⅔ rule. A coffee table should be ⅔ the width of your sofa, regardless of the shape. Having this width can help you have space to get up from the sofa and prevent the table from taking up too much space.

Before you go to a furniture store, make sure to measure your space and your couch so you can know the exact size that you can fit in your living room.

Finding The Right Height

More often than not, coffee tables are about the same height as the seating cushions of your couch. It should be no more than 2 to 3 inches above or below the sofa seat. If the table is too tall or too short it won’t be practical or add to the style of the space.

Coffee tables can help add character to the space, so ensuring that it is the right height and width will allow people to see its character, instead of focusing on how odd the measurements are.

Do You Have A Sofa Or Sectional?

Different size sofas or longer sectionals will need different sizes of tables even if the couches are the same height. Different shapes will also pair better with traditional sofas, love seats, or sectionals.

Sofas look best with oval or rectangular coffee tables, and sectionals or large furniture groupings look best with round or square coffee tables. A table that is proportional to the couch and other furniture in your living room is the best choice for your space.

Different Table Shapes

Rectangle: This is the most common shape for coffee tables that appear in homes and offices. This is a common shape because it pairs well with traditional and standard sofas. Rectangular tables help you to display plants, and photo albums, or hold drinks while you are seated on your couch.

Mason Single Table, coffee table

Round: The round coffee table also pairs well with small or large sofas and helps to fill the space without looking overcrowded. It makes it easier to configure with other furniture pieces. Round tables lead to smoother traffic flow and limit sharp edges that children or pets can bump into.

Square: Square coffee tables pair best with sectionals or large furniture arrangements. If you have a traditional sofa, pairing two squares together can look just as good as a rectangle and double the usable surface space. These coffee tables give you more creative freedom.

Oval: These pair well with a sofa and chaise and provide a similar design feel as round tables. They are also kid-friendly and even upholstered ottomans in a similar shape can be a great option for homeowners with young kids.

Organic: If a traditional shape is not for you, organic or abstract shapes for tables and ottomans do exist. Cement, metal, fabric, or wood options can be made into hexagons, spheres, octagons, or even a table that doesn’t have flat tabletop space.

Moving to a new place is an exciting and stressful time. Moving all your belongings without damaging them or losing precious belongings are aspects that you should consider when packing a moving van or trailer. Your furniture is something that is built to last, so treating it correctly during a move will ensure that it makes it to your new home in the best state possible.

Below are some do’s and don’ts for packing your furniture items and transporting them to your new living space. If you want to ensure that your home has plenty of space for furniture and you have the pieces that you love still intact, follow these guidelines for packing your furniture.

1- Disassemble Large Furniture Pieces

Pieces that are too heavy to carry or may not fit through small spaces should be disassembled to make the moving process smoother. Disassembling furniture can be tricky if you are in a hurry, but when done properly, you can ensure that all the components receive proper padding and fit nicely in a moving truck.

When you disassemble, make sure to keep small parts like screws or fasteners in a baggie or container that is clearly labeled with what furniture piece they belong to. If you have assembly instructions for the piece, it may be helpful to use them in the disassembling process as well.

2- Get Rid Of Old Furniture

Old furniture that is falling apart or will not fit in your new home should be disposed of or sold before you are ready to move. Packing your furniture will be much easier if broken or old pieces are taken out of the mix. You will want your furniture in your new home to be ready to go once you move in, so hauling damaged furniture to be dealt with in your new place is counterproductive.

3- Inspect For Damages And Record Before The Move

Some furniture pieces have minimal damage but still perform well, taking photos or inspecting the furniture and recording what dings or scuffs they have before the move will help you monitor the state of the furniture. If you have a moving company help load and unload your furniture, keeping track of these damages will help you to know if they damaged anything during the move. Packing your furniture by yourself could also lead to new dents or scratches if it is not wrapped properly. Knowing what small areas need to be repaired when you get to the new space will help save you time.

4- How To Wrap Your Furniture

packing your furniture

Each furniture piece needs to be wrapped and protected differently. Couches, dressers, chairs, or mirrors may need different padding and directional wrapping.

Couches: When packing a couch or upholstered chairs, a furniture bag may be a good option. You can also use blankets held in place with packing tape if a furniture bag is not available. Leather should never be wrapped with plastic as it needs to breathe.

Glass or mirrors: Removing glass components from table tops or dressers will help lower the risk of them being broken. These furniture pieces should be wrapped in packing paper and taped with masking tape. Make sure to never stick tape directly on the surface of the furniture as it can damage it or get severely stuck to the glass and be hard to remove.

Wood furniture: Wrapping wood furniture in any kind of plastic can be damaging. If you want to protect your wood pieces properly, pack them with blankets or furniture pads and ensure all surfaces are covered.

5- Clean Furniture Before Packing It

Removing dust and grit before packing your furniture will help reduce friction and scratches on the furniture pieces. During moving, grime can cause surfaces to be slippery or cause damage to other pieces that are stacked together.

Cleaning before you arrive at your new place will not only help you keep your furniture nicer, but it will also save you stress and time worrying about cleaning once the pieces are moved into your new place. Cleaning a new place is a common practice, but limiting the number of surfaces you need to clean can lead to more relaxation time.

6- Leave Plenty Of Time For Packing Furniture

Packing your furniture in a rush can lead to problems. Leaving yourself with plenty of time to wrap, pad, pack, and stack furniture will prevent damage and frustration. Planning your move early will also help you determine if you need the help of a professional moving team. Taking the time to create a packing plan will keep your furniture safe and sound until you reach your destination.
