3+ Big Differences Between Dressers And Chests Of Drawers

Home / Archives for Furniture

There are many ways to enhance the interior of your home to make it feel more comfortable and look more appealing. One of the best ways to improve the appearance of your home is to decrease the amount of clutter and items scattered on your floor and tables. With dressers or chests of drawers, this problem can be quickly and easily remedied. Simply take the items and place them in the drawers for easy storage. However, which is the better choice between dressers and chests of drawers? Continue reading to learn more about the difference between these two types of furniture.

dressers

Dressers

As the name suggests, dressers are furniture involved with dressing. A dresser is a piece of furniture that is typically used to store clothing but can also be used to store toys, blankets, and other items. Dressers are part of the armoire family that dates back to 16th century England and have become a staple in American and western bedrooms. Typically dressers have six drawers that are in two columns side-by-side. Many people enjoy dressers because they usually extend up to waist level, making them a great piece of furniture for storing and displaying things.

Chests Of Drawers

Chests of drawers are another type of furniture used to store clothing and are descended from armoires. A chest of drawers has vertical storage space, with six to eight drawers stacked on top of each other. Some people just consider a chest of drawers a fancy name for a dresser, but there is a distinct difference between the number of drawers and where the drawers are located. The advantage of a chest of drawers is that you retain more spatial area within a bedroom.

Which Is Better?

Dressers and chests of drawers are both excellent choices for furniture pieces in your home. While each serves the same purpose, it is important to understand which piece would be more suitable for your space. If you are looking to maximize space in your home, have a smaller bedroom, or have multiple pieces of furniture you would like to display, a chest of drawers may be your best bet. Due to being slender and tall, chests of drawers are a great pick for offices, guest rooms, and smaller bedrooms.

However, if you are looking for storage that also doubles as a table, a dresser may be a better option. Dressers are perfect for bedrooms because they have a grand presence within a room and can make a lovely statement. Oftentimes, dressers will also have a mirror atop them, which makes them perfect for getting ready in the morning. When deciding between a dresser and a chest of drawers, simply think about your needs and your space and make a choice for yourself about which will best suit your needs.

Choosing a solid wood dining table helps bring a rustic feel and more character to your dining room. When you choose a hand-built piece, you want to maintain the quality. Taking care of solid wood requires some consistent maintenance. Sugar House Furniture wants to help our customers take care of their mission-style furniture. Here are some essential tips for taking care of solid wood dining tables.

Caring For Your Wood Dining Table

1- Wipe Down After Meals

The easiest way to keep your table looking pristine is to wipe it down after eating meals. Wiping down with a damp cloth can protect the wood and remove grease buildup and other food debris from getting stuck to your table.

Cleaning after meals is just a common household cleaning task that can help make your home look put together. Cleaning after eating also helps prevent liquids from seeping into the wood and causing damage.

2- Keep Away From Direct Heat And Sunlight

When exposed to heat or sunlight, wood can warp or become faded. Heat can dry out the wood which then leads it to crack and can ruin the integrity of your furniture. Keep your dining table away from direct sunlight through windows, or place it next to a heater.

3- Fill In Nicks Or Scratches

Owning solid wood furniture is bound to come with scratches and wear and tear. Using your table will come with scratches and nicks that may need to be covered up. There are simple ways to fill in shallow scratches including using a crayon, shoe polish, or even coffee grounds to cover the marks.

When using a product to fill in cracks or scratches, make sure that you are using a matching color and apply it in the direction of the scratch.

4- Avoid Warping Of The Eaves

Some dining tables come with leaves, eaves, or inserts that can make the table bigger for special occasions. Storing and taking care of the eaves is just as essential as taking care of your tabletop. Store your leaves flat and away from moisture. You want your dining room to be a place to gather and keep your friends and family coming back.

5- Dust Consistently

While dust is small and seems light, cleaning it off of your table can keep it looking sleek. Dusting may seem like a small task but the build-up can scratch the wood. Avoid using a cloth or abrasive cleaner, and gently buff the surface with a microfiber towel.

6- Avoid Moisture

Moisture and condensation can cause warps in the wood. Using coasters, and placemats, and keeping liquid, like ink away from your wood dining table can prevent staining and warps. Keeping up with natural wood and keeping it away from humidity and moisture can make your furniture last longer.

Another way to avoid spills is to use a tablecloth when eating. This can help stop liquids from seeping deep into the wood. Cleaning up sticky liquids can make the wood stand up to more wear and tear.

Long Term Maintenance

Since wood furniture can last for a long time, you will need to keep up regular maintenance for it to last through your adult life. You can bring new life to your dining table with a quality refinish.

If your furniture has become sun faded on one side, try flipping it in the other direction so that it can fade evenly. Sun fading may not be the end of the world and can be stained over or aged evenly to make it look natural.

Buying furniture requires you to be well informed and have a clear idea of what you can afford. Working with salespeople can be tricky, but if you have clear questions prepared ahead of time, you might actually save money.

Not only does asking questions make you seem more informed, you will be able to find out the quality of the furniture and negotiate a price, without getting screwed over with high prices. If you hate feeling pressured when making a large purchase, read through this list of questions you should ask while buying furniture, to make sure you get the absolute best buying experience.

1- How Was This Furniture Made?

One of the most important questions to ask is about how the product was made. You should know what type of frame the piece has, what material it was crafted from and what support it has. Other follow up questions you can ask could be where it was made and who manufactured it.

You want to make sure that your money is going towards a high quality purchase that will last you longer than just taking it off the lot. Asking the salesperson to give you these details and if they do not know, it might be best to choose a different retailer. Buying an inexpensive piece might seem nice at the time, but you will end up replacing it down the road.

2- Do You Have Other Items In The Same Price Range?

Having options is always a good idea. If you are looking for a dresser in your budget, ask them to see all the options that fit in your price range. This will help you to make an informed decision by knowing that there are other options that may be just as good that are less expensive.

Not every piece is going to suit each buyer, asking to see more options can help show you that other styles might serve your needs better. If the piece you were looking at is a little out of your budget, ask to see something similar that is in your range.

3- Why Should I Buy From You?

This might be one of the most important questions to ask when buying furniture. Asking this question might give you multiple answers in one. As a consumer you have the right to know what stores offer and choose one that treats you fairly. You can ask specifics about what sets them apart from the competition, what extra options they offer, ask about their merchandise selection and what guarantees they offer.

This can be a good time to ask about a return policy or if there are guarantees from the manufacture of the furniture.

4- What Happens If Things Go Wrong?

Knowing who will be responsible if problems do arise or you decide not to keep the furniture. Having this knowledge before you buy will keep you from being blindsided by extra costs if accidents do happen. Guarantees will also be helpful here too.

5- Are There Additional Costs?

Some manufacturers will customize the furniture, but it can cost extra. Ask about the different options for customization and how much it will cost.

Delivery options may also not be included in the original price. Ask about delivery to your home and if that is included in the purchase price.

You can also ask if they offer the removal of old furniture and if you can pay for this. Making room for the new furniture can be a hassle with old furniture still in your home, if you have the option for them to remove it for you, take it.
